Pincerna, Gordonzello, Melgarajo, Meóriga, El Sueño de las Alforjas, Valmadrigal and Petra Merino have triumphed at the Baco, Ecovino, International Virtus and Onvinum Awards

A new Grand Gold, eight Golds and twelve Silvers bring the total to a further twenty-one medals for wines certified by the León Designation of Origin as the season of major national and international wine competitions progresses. This tally, which is still provisional, brings the total number of prestigious awards won so far this year by wineries affiliated to the Regulatory Council to 58.

With such important and internationally renowned competitions as Decanter and the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles still to come—the latter in its exclusive session for whites and reds—the Baco Awards, in the 40th edition of Spain’s premier event for young wines from the 2025 vintage, organised by the Spanish Union of Wine Tasters, awarded its Baco de Oro prizes to the rosés Pincerna (Pincerna) —also chosen as the best in the competition in its varietal category—, Peregrino (Gordonzello), Esencia 33 (Meóriga), the four made from Prieto Picudo, and Savaliebre (Melgarajo), made from Negro Saurí. In addition, the winegrowers’ association of Melgar de Abajo (Valladolid) won another gold medal for its white wine Valdeleña, made from Verdejo grapes.

The haul of twelve medals is rounded off by Silver Bacchus awards for the rosés Valdeleña, Castillo de Valmadrigal and Vinea Noctis (both from Vinícola Valmadrigal), the red Pincerna, also made from Prieto Picudo, and the whites Pincerna, Peregrino and Finca Tiramulos, all three made from the Albarín variety.

Previously, El Sueño de las Alforjas, which produces its wines under organic certification for the entire vineyard and its wines, had once again swept the board with five medals at Ecovino, a favourite competition for the Valdevimbre winery, adding two gold medals for the Albarín Cascabel 2025 (in the category of whites with no oak contact) and El Sueño de las Alforjas 2024 (white with oak contact). The three silver medals went to the Prieto Picudo reds: Tal Cual 2024 (un-oaked), Marcialis 2024 and El Sueño de las Alforjas 2022 (both barrel-aged).

The International Virtus Awards, which include a Grand Gold category in their medal table, once again proved favourable for the Petra Merino winery in Grajal de Campos, as it repeated this high distinction for its Negro de Viña, a long-aged red wine made from the Mencía grape variety that had already triumphed in Lisbon.

Finally, Pincerna (Grajal de Campos) once again demonstrated its high winemaking quality at the Onvinum Wine Awards with a gold medal for Fáfila Pétriz, a complex 2024 white, and silver medals for Pincerna, also made from Albarín and in this case from the 2025 vintage, and the red Pincerna Sumiller, from the 2024 vintage, made from the Prieto Picudo grape variety and aged in barrels.
