Together with another thirty regulatory councils, it takes part in the festive and vindicatory celebration of Día del Vino DO with a major event in Valencia de Don Juan
Valencia de Don Juan, 6 May 2026
The Denominación de Origen León will celebrate Día del Vino DO (DO Wine Day) next Saturday, an event held every year for the past decade on the second Saturday of May. Once again, it will join wine denominations of origin from across the country, more than thirty on this occasion, in a large-scale, simultaneous toast at exactly 1.30 pm. The event will take place on Calle Mayor (officially Isaac García de Quirós) in Valencia de Don Juan, home of the Regulatory Council.
DO León will bring colour to this celebration by raising glasses of rosé wine made from its flagship variety, Prieto Picudo. The flavour will be enhanced with a double serving of Cecina IGP, an emblematic product of León’s larder, and also of the Chorizo de León Guarantee Mark. As is customary at these events, there will be musical entertainment, on this occasion provided by dj Manolo Volkscooter.
This collective celebration, organised by the Conferencia Española de Consejos Reguladores Vitivinícolas (Spanish Conference of Wine Regulatory Councils) under the leitmotiv ‘El vino DO atrae turismo e inversión a las zonas rurales. ¡Brindemos por ello!’ (‘DO wine brings tourism and investment to rural areas. Let’s toast to that!’), aims to highlight the contribution that quality designations, and the wine sector in particular, make to rural communities. For this reason, Día Vino DO 2026 will place a special focus this year on wine tourism, to underline the importance of wine denominations of origin as a driver of experiential and collaborative tourism in rural areas, helping to retain population, generate wealth and attract investment.
It is, ultimately, an action with both a festive and vindicatory character. On one hand, it seeks to bring denomination-of-origin wine closer to society as a whole, presenting it as one of the products most deeply rooted in our rural areas and which, thanks to its quality, prestige and cultural value, brings the greatest and best image to wine-producing regions. On the other hand, it also seeks to reaffirm the concept of ‘denomination of origin’ and to highlight, year after year, different aspects of the positive impact that DOs have on the territories where they are produced.
In addition, on the occasion of Día Vino DO, the Cecrv presents an award to honour individuals or initiatives that have contributed significantly to bringing the rural world and the wine sector closer to the public. This year, the recognition goes to journalist, broadcaster and writer Sonsoles Ónega, in acknowledgement of the sensitivity, respect and pride she has shown throughout her professional career for the rural world, as well as for her explicit support of the wine sector. The well-known journalist stands out for defending the moderate consumption of wine and the role of the sector in the rural economy.
