On Saturday, 9 May 2026, Spain will celebrate D.O. Wine Day 2026 (Día del Vino D.O. 2026), a collective initiative led by the Spanish Conference of Wine Regulatory Councils (CECRV) that reaches its tenth edition this year. The León Designation of Origin joins this event once again, bringing together wine designations of origin from across Spain in a shared celebration.
A Leitmotiv Focused on Wine Tourism
This year’s edition revolves around the hashtag #EnoturismoVINODO and the following leitmotiv (kept in its original Spanish):
“El vino D.O. atrae turismo e inversión a las zonas rurales. ¡Brindemos por ello!”
(“D.O. wine attracts tourism and investment to rural areas. Let’s raise a glass to that!”)
With this message, CECRV and the participating designations aim to highlight the importance of D.O. wine and wine designations of origin as a driver of experiential and collaborative tourism in rural areas, an activity that helps retain population, generate wealth, and attract investment.
Designations of origin play a key role in this context: they are the foundation of a region’s wine tourism offer, they bring rigor and prestige to the product, and they often drive the wine routes that structure and promote the enotourism experience of the territory.
The León Event: Valencia de Don Juan
D.O. León will celebrate D.O. Wine Day 2026 at an emblematic location in the province:
📍 Calle Mayor, Valencia de Don Juan 📅 Saturday, 9 May 2026 (See in map)
It will be a chance to bring the wines of D.O. León closer to the public, enjoy our wineries, and reaffirm the role of León wine as an engine of tourism and rural development.
Recognition for Sonsoles Ónega
As part of D.O. Wine Day 2026, CECRV will present its third annual recognition award, which in this edition goes to journalist, broadcaster, and writer Sonsoles Ónega.
This distinction publicly acknowledges that Sonsoles Ónega represents many of the values we identify with the world of wine and rural life, having shown throughout her career sensitivity, respect, and pride for her roots, as well as explicit support for the wine sector, including the defense of moderate wine consumption and her passion for gastronomy.
The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 5 May at 11:00 AM at the Hotel Catalonia Atocha (C/ Atocha 81, Madrid).
A Collective Celebration
D.O. Wine Day 2026 is, at its core, a joint action: the sum of activities organized by each designation of origin is part of a single collective celebration. Each territory contributes its own identity and particularities, but all D.O.s share a common image, communication, and content to jointly champion the value of wine with a designation of origin.
From D.O. León, we invite neighbors, visitors, wine enthusiasts, and lovers of the rural environment to join us on 9 May in Valencia de Don Juan. Let’s raise a glass to wine tourism, to our rural areas, and to D.O. wine!
