The prestigious Decanter World Awards recognises the quality of the production of the Pincerna, Gordonzello, Vile and Tampesta wineries and the Albarín and Prieto Picudo wines
The wines certified by the Regulatory Council of the Denominación de Origen León added another eight medals this week to its magnificent 2025 list, in this case in the most important, prestigious and influential competition in the world. Decanter World Awards (DWWA) recognised with its awards the quality of the winemaking of four wineries in the wine production area in the south of the province and the enormous oenological potential of its two reference grape varieties: the Albarín in the case of whites and the Prieto Picudo for the vinification of rosés and reds.
In an international competition in which obtaining a distinction of any kind is already a triumph for the participants, three wines from the Denominación de Origen León finally won silver medals. These were the white ‘Pincerna Albarín 2024’ (92 puntos sobre 100), (92 points out of 100), from the Pincerna winery (Grajal de Campos), and the reds ‘Peregrino 14’, from the 2018 vintage (91), Gordonzello (Gordoncillo), and ‘Don Suero’, from the 2020 vintage (90), from Vinos de León-Vile (Valdevimbre).
The other five medals, bronze in all cases, went to the Albarín whites ‘Peregrino 2024’ (89), again from Gordonzello, and ‘Valjunco 2023′ (88), also from Vinos de León-Vile; the rosé “Khur 2024”, from the Gordoncillo winery, and the reds ‘Golán‘ (87) and ‘Tampesta’ (87), both from the 2021 vintage and from the Tampesta-Andrés Marcos winery, also located in Valdevimbre.
So far this season, the wines certified by the León Designation of Origin have accumulated forty-nine medals (three Grand Gold, twenty-six Gold, fifteen Silver and five Bronze) in major international competitions, confirming the excellent organoleptic qualities and the extraordinary oenological potential of the indigenous varieties of reference in the wine-growing territory of the south of the province of León and the north of Valladolid: Albarín in the case of whites and Prieto Picudo for rosés and reds certified by the Regulatory Council.
The Decanter World Wine Awards reached their 22nd edition this year, with record participation: 57 countries and 18,244 wines evaluated. Since its inception, the DWWA has established its reputation as the world’s largest and most influential wine competition, acclaimed and trusted above all for its rigorous blind judging process. For two weeks, 248 professional tasters representing 35 countries (including 72 masters of wine and 22 master sommeliers) examined, debated and certified the merits of wines from the world’s most diverse wine producing regions.
The prestigious British competition, with extraordinary influence on the international wine market and enormous critical power over wine consumption, thus confirms its role as a world reference for both professionals and wine enthusiasts seeking proven quality at all levels of price and origin.
